FISHING
Fresh water fishing

The spring begins with a trophy steelhead run in the world renowned Situk River in April & May. Sockeye then take over the Situk with the peak happening the last two weeks of June and first two weeks of July, although the 3rd week is consistent as well. Silver salmon fill the river beginning in late August & run into October. Fat dolly vardens & rainbow trout follow the other runs into the river throughout the summer.

In September during the peak of silver salmon fishing the bright fish are found in all the waters of the area including the Lost River and Tawah Creek, both accessible by vehicle from the lodge.

Another local Yakutat spot is the Ankau River, or more exactly the Ankau River bridge. It can be great fun to fish from the bridge with herring and catch a couple of silvers.

Flying out to other area rivers for king salmon or silver salmon can also be a great addition to your fishing trip to Yakutat, Alaska. There are two charter airlines in Yakutat, Alsek Air and Yakutat Coastal Airlines.  It is often best to check in on these opportunities when you get to town and plan a last minute flight when the fishing is hot. See our fishing information page for links to 2 current fishing reports!

Leonard's Landing outfitting of drift boats in the Tongass National Forest
is authorized by a special use permit issued by the U.S. Forest Service.

Salt water fishing

Yakutat Bay has the best halibut fishing in the world. The big flatfish are often found in 50-200 feet of water just 40 minutes from the dock. The best halibut fishing is from April through July and they can be caught even into September. Ling cod and black sea bass are often picked up while out halibut fishing.

King salmon can be found in the bay in May and June. Silver salmon, limit 6 per day, inhabit the bay in great numbers in August and early September. Fish for them from one of our rental fleet of Lund skiffs-double and triple headers are not unheard of.
